Thejaswini's Story: Graphic Design Internship in Melbourne
This is TJ!
Thejaswini graduated with Distinction in the Bachelor of Creative Industries from Queensland University of Technology. Her goal is to combine her creative passions to communicate through captivating visuals. With that, she joined the program and interned with the branding agency Studio Swish in Melbourne.
Could you describe what your day-to-day looks like as an intern for Studio Swish?
I worked 3 days a week; one day in the office and 2 days from home. The office was a shared space between Studio Swish, Place Form Space and Studio Y. It had a very laid-back & friendly atmosphere. After casual morning meetings, I'd often work by myself and offer my supervisor updates at my own pace. Everyone in the office was very welcoming and helpful at every stage of the internship!
My tasks involved: creating & refining the social strategies used, scheduling content for Instagram & LinkedIn, working on designing assets for client meetings and creating branding concepts to be presented to clients.
What was your favorite part about your internship?
Due to my personal interest in branding, I enjoyed designing brand concepts and assets according to existing guidelines. Working closely with Elie, the creative director, I learned a lot about his design and client interaction processes, which I have applied to my freelance work.
I was also responsible for managing the studio’s social media. Although it wasn’t my initial favorite task, I gained valuable insights into social media strategies and processes. Later, I handled clients' social media platforms as well. I believe these new skills will be valuable in my future endeavors.
Did your internship meet your expectations and how will it impact your career goals?
Yes, I have learned a lot from my time at Swish and have improved as a designer in multiple ways. I now have more technical skills than when I started, including proficiency in After Effects. I also have a broader skill set, such as social media management. I am more confident in myself and my abilities. I am now moving forward with my job hunt and believe that my new skills will be beneficial in the future.
How did ArtBound Initiative help you the most?
I found the networking aspect of ABI the most helpful. By connecting with professionals in the industry through ABI, I managed to gain some invaluable perspectives that I will be able to take with me for the rest of my creative career.
