Senthil's Story: Arts Administration Internship in New York
This is Senthil!
With a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from Aberystwyth University, Senthil sought to apply his academic knowledge in the real world through the ArtBound Initiative program. After finishing the program's curriculum and coaching sessions, he traveled all the way from UK to New York for an editorial/communications internship with Residency Unlimited, a non-profit art organization that supports the creation, presentation and dissemination of contemporary art. Could you describe what your day-to-day looks like as an intern for Residency Unlimited?
My daily routine consisted of making reports and brochures for exhibitions, organizing the studio visit schedule, and assisting in the installation and de-installation of shows. The environment at RU was amazing, it's non-hierarchical, and democratic, with a strong emphasis on dialogue and communication.
What was your favorite part about your internship?
The most enjoyable and rewarding aspect of my internship was meeting and working with artists to ensure the success of their projects and endeavours.
Did your internship meet your expectations and how will it impact your career goals?
It has met all of my expectations and pushed me to be the best version of myself. Every challenge I came across just proved to me that I can handle anything that comes my way, and my confidence has now skyrocketed.
How would you describe the way ArtBound Initiative helped you the most?
ArtBound helped by preparing me for the working world and showing me what to expect from myself and my peers. It put me in the right state of mind to tackle the internship. I met some amazing people who were also based in New York through this program and the experience as a whole changed my life. The sessions with career coaches and experts in the field of recruitment were the most beneficial and it is these connections and partnerships that make ABI stand out from the rest.
