Rebecca's Story: Public Relations Internship in Sydney

This is Rebecca!

Rebecca graduated with a Bachelor of Communications in PR & Journalism from Curtin University! During her studies at university, she decided to join the ArtBound Initiative program and landed a Public Relations Internship at Soda Communications, a boutique-sized PR consultancy jam-packed with big-agency experience.

Could you describe what your day-to-day & the environment looks like as a PR intern for Soda?

I usually start by doing social sweeps for media coverage purposes, followed by building media lists or conducting research for clients we are prioritizing. Depending on the client we are working on, tasks include preparing mailers, sourcing for event suppliers, or creating social media content. I also helped with administrative tasks like getting supplies and building media lists.

It is very laid back and relaxed. The team at SODA is very small, which means that you get to directly interact with everyone. You may be invited out for drinks after work once in a while or before the agency closes during the holidays. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming!

What was your favorite part about your internship?

My favorite part would be learning about the type of collaterals PR professionals work on and understanding the current media landscape in Australia. The tasks I have done at SODA have provided me with a variety of different insights because I got to work on several different clients.

Did your internship meet your expectations and how will it impact your career goals?

Mostly, yes. It was more enjoyable and less taxing than I expected it to be. It has opened up more opportunities for me, as I have received several full-time job offers in Public Relations!

How did ArtBound Initiative help you the most?

ABI helped me the most by connecting me with knowledgeable professionals. With that, I was able to understand what career I would like to pursue, and where I would like to do so.
