Lisa's Story: Gallery Assistant Internship in Berlin

This is Lisa!

Upon completion of her Master of Art Teaching in Art Education at Maryland Institute College of Art, Lisa seeks to explore potential career paths in the creative industry and wants to expand her understanding in the professional arts sector. She then landed an internship at Lou Cantor in Berlin. Read more below on Lisa's internship story!

Could you describe what your day-to-day looks like as an intern for Lou Cantor?

I would start by working on research tasks (e.g. exhibition theme/concept, market research of specific products, etc.). I would be in contact with different organizations and companies to organize certain purchases for art materials and book publication houses. Some days I would help on the official website, updating and adding information to improve the SEO as well as accessibility.

Other days, I would help out with making studies and mock-ups for projects as well as testing out different software and digital tools like the new AI feature in Photoshop. I would then close out by sending my supervisor a quick message about what I've managed to do that day and asking what else she needed. The day-to-day routine was never the same, which I appreciated and relished.

What was your favorite part about your internship?

I really appreciated the hands-on work in making studies for sculptures, research for themes/concepts, and documenting material tests/process of projects.

Did your internship meet your expectations and how will it impact your career goals?

Yes, the internship helped me gain an extraordinary level of insight into the art world in Berlin and what it means to be a freelancing artist/ art collective. This will help me choose jobs in the future, as I have research and sculptural art experience.

How did ArtBound Initiative help you the most?

They helped me most with organizing an opportunity that I otherwise would not have had access to in the same way. They helped support me along the way and always answered questions. ABI was really open to connecting people with each other and facilitating the process. I really appreciated the meetings with different ABI coaches who helped give me confidence and perspective, making me feel like I could plan and achieve my goals.
