Alex's Story: Production Internship in New York

This is Alex!

Alex, a Media & Communications student at NYU, has a deep love for photography and videography. With extensive prior experience collaborating with artists like Grace Jones and Kiesza, as well as involvement in various productions, Alex sought to enhance his skills by enrolling in the ArtBound Initiative program. This led to an internship at Mark Seliger Studio!

Could you describe what your day-to-day looks like as an intern for Mark Seliger?

I interned at Mark Seliger Studio, based in NYC. Mark doesn't need any introduction, but for those who may not know, he is a legendary photographer who has shot countless iconic images you probably grew up with. He shoots key arts, editorials, as well as general commercials, working with A-list celebrities.

I was initially part of the production team, but soon moved over to the business development team. My responsibilities included, but were not limited to: researching and identifying potential projects for Mark to pursue, finding the right contacts for outreach, overseeing data input, creating pitch decks, assisting during shoots, as well as overseeing, creating, and editing content for social media.

What was your favorite part about your internship?

Directly working with an industry giant like Mark is always a pleasure. Observing, learning, and retaining the way he thinks, operates, and works is a great experience. Due to my general foundational knowledge in all departments, expanding and deepening my knowledge in each department has always been super useful. This has allowed me to not only strengthen my initial strengths but also to open my eyes to certain aspects of the industry that I was not aware of or interested in.

Did your internship meet your expectations and how will it impact your career goals?

Interning here at Mark Seliger Studio has definitely left me with a huge impression of what the industry is really like, experiencing everything from the conception of the idea all the way to the final stages of production, all first-hand.

Working with a legend in the industry like Mark and observing/learning/retaining how he operates, thinks, and executes is the biggest plus and asset that will help me for the rest of my career for sure. It also allowed me to open my eyes to different areas of industry, opening up the possibilities.

How did ArtBound Initiative help you the most?

ABI and its team have been extremely helpful not only in providing general assistance on how to deal with the industry and its processes, but also on a more personalized level. Whenever there was a situation where I needed outside advice, ABI was there for me.

While I thought of ABI as a means to find a great internship opportunity, ABI has delivered more and helped me throughout the internship too!
